We spend countless time and money on fancy shampoos and conditioners. Our hair is our glory and we want to keep it lustrous, maintained – and HEALTHY! After all – our hair is protecting the most vital part of our body; our scalp (which protects our BRAIN). Debate aside, one thing that we can all agree on is the “natural approach” to health. We shop whole-foods and organic. We love free-range meat and going “raw” is all the hype. Gluten-free foods have exploded, and overall, we have become far more conscious about what we “intake” – so why should our shampoos and conditioners be any different? Here are some very common additives in your expensive, fancy “shampoos and conditioners:” (for the green at heart, try not to faint).
Ammonium Chloride – Chloride? Need I say more? It not only dries out the hair (because it is salt-based and extremely acidic) but according to Wikipedia, “The mineral is commonly formed on burning coal dumps, due to condensation of coal-derived gasses.” In addition, “It is the product from the reaction of hydrochloric acid and ammonia.” Sounds great. Apparently, if inhaled, you should contact the poison control center (or the hospital) immediately.
Sodium Laureth Sulfate – Oh yeah- it’s in almost everything, and it is classified as a “detergent.” This chemical is associated with dangerous carcinogens. It also exacerbates other chemicals.
Methylchloroisothiazolinone – Sure, it keeps your products “fresh” (isn’t that ironic?) but it also irritates the skin and contributes to problems with the immune system. Cough.
Propylene Glycol – How do the big brands “moisturize” your hair? They throw in a little dabble of honey and a big dribble of propylene glycol – and bam! Intense moisture… and respiratory and immune disorders. Smooth operator.
Okay. You get the jist. Here are some more “common” ingredients to avoid:

But what’s even better? Why – making your own of course! Not only is it a fun project, but you’ll be able to rest assured knowing exactly what you are putting on your precious head. You can also customize your shampoos and conditioners to tailor your needs.
From awesome add-ins to your favorite “smells” – making your own shampoos and conditioners is safer and best of all – cheaper. They also make wonderful gifts, as any woman can appreciate natural products, especially when hand-made by a close friend or relative.

Making your own shampoo
For the base, you will need:
¼ cup natural coconut milk (avoid the kind in the can, try and fid extra virgin if you can)
1/3 cup, clear, natural liquid soap (try a health store)
Depending on how dry or course your hair is, feel free to add:
1/3 teaspoon of almond or olive oil
4 muddled vitamin-e capsules (get rid of the glycerine capsule part) or you can purchase straight-up, vitamin-e oil without the gel capsules. Use about ¼ teaspoon.
Combine all ingredients in a spray bottle; you may need a funnel. Shake well. You can also opt to reuse an old shampoo bottle or a mason jar. If you decide to use a “foam” dispenser, add one cup of distilled water.
Making your own conditioner
Most home-made conditioners use apple-cider vinegar as its base. The vinegar detangles the hair and seals the cuticle, while also leveling the hair’s Ph.
1 Tablespoon of apple-cider vinegar to one cup of water (ratio 1:1)

2 Tablespoons apple cider vinegar
1 tablespoon honey
2 cups water
Add all ingredients into another container and shake well.

In fact, many are claiming to have the best-looking hair of their life after the transition. It’s always worth a try – and hey, if it doesn’t work, then no harm, no foul.
It will however take some time for your scalp to get used to. Essentially, your hair is used to being constantly stripped of its moisture, so at first, it will naturally be a pain in the arse. This method is generally not recommended for women with thin, fine hair.
Normal shelf shampoos are composed of detergents (yep – the same ingredients in harsh liquid hand-soaps and laundry cleansers), so the scalp will at first try and compensate for the change, which usually means greasy locks. 5 Reasons to Pack a Meal When Traveling
Eat Well – The only way to really be in charge of your family’s nutrition is to make your own food. Fast food makes it particularly tough to find anything nourishing, and when traveling, it’s likely that you’re entering into a time of more compromising foods anyway, I choose to eat well on the road and have fun when we’re with family, at an event, or visiting others.
Spend Less – Similarly, the best way to save money on food is to make your own. Buying a meal for our family, with an 8-year-old boy, 5-year-old girl, and almost-2-year-old carnivorous male, runs $20 pretty quickly. I can pack our food in the single digits, and we waste less, too.
Flexibility of Time – Our fondest desire when in the car is for our littlest to fall asleep. It’s much less stressful for everyone. If we have our own food, the big kids can eat when they’re hungry without running the risk of having to stop somewhere 20 minutes after John finally gives up to the sandman.
Occupying Time – The second most-wanted reality in the car is content kiddos, ones who aren’t saying, “When will we get there?” or “I’m bored!” For our slow eaters, a meal can take a glorious 30-60 minutes, during which time they’re completely happy, and we get home faster because we didn’t have to stop for food, just for potty, gas, and wiggle worms.

It takes a little more prep to pack our own grub, but I’m happy to do it for my kids’ good health.
I used to pack everything together, family style, like a picnic, but recently I started packing individual lunchboxes for the big kids, and I really like that system.
The kids can have some responsibility for their own food, and if the littlest is sleeping (finally), it’s so easy to just pass back a lunchbox (or already have it next to them at the start of the trip). The Food We Packed For Our Roadtrip
Our travels over Memorial Day weekend took us 6 hours one way, so we had to pack dinner on the way down and lunch on the way back.

We were visiting family and I brought a lot of food for meals because our hosts had just had a baby, so I knew what options we’d likely have for packing on the return trip.

Waste-Free Traveling Without Plastic
I cringe when I think about all the waste that can be created by packing food to go.
Fortunately, our culture is slowly turning toward reusing and reducing waste, which is so cool. Here are the gadgets we have in our home for traveling with food that help us avoid baggies:
Reusable sandwich bags – I reviewed a bunch a while back, and we still use them very regularly.
Leah’s favorite is her princess bag, the Itzy Ritzy brand from Mom4Life. I’ve decided I need to pick up one for Paul since this is nearly the only one I’d put really goopy goodies in, like a soft pear. It isn’t waterproof, but it’s close! I also need a boy print for John at church, since Itzy Ritzy has a quiet zipper and all the rest of our are – rrrrrrrip! – Velcro. That’s just loud stuff.

For sandwiches, Kids Konserve food cozy is a great option, as are many other brands that fold out into a placemat. We actually really love our cloth versions, but the seller is out of business now.

Personal “Bento-style” lunch box thingys – clearly I don’t really know what to call these, but let’s just say I’ve used one or the other every day of first grade:
ECO Lunchbox 3-in-1: I was a bit harsh on this not being able to fit a tall sandwich when I first reviewed it, but now that we rarely have bread, it’s been absolutely perfect for most of Paul’s lunches, and it’s super cool that I can pull out the smallest box and the top box and use them for quick snacks in the car. We do it often!
LunchBots Quad (above): This is rather new for us, and other than the fact that it can be a little hard to clean (so can the ECO, but the Lunchbot is slightly worse because there are tiny spaces beneath each partition), it’s been awesome. I rather enjoy the challenge of finding 4 appropriately sized foods to fill each of the spots. (Lunchbot also comes in 3, 2 or one big compartment).
Small Stainless Steel Containers
Kids Konserve Nesting Trio Stainless-Steel Containers: These are cute, but 6yos can’t open them easily, and they are not leakproof. Trust me and my yogurt on that one. Best for dry munchies
Life Without Plastic‘s stainless steel with clips is my son’s favorite for yogurt at lunch – he can open it without spilling, and it’s not as heavy as glass. This is one investment worth making! (pictured at right)
Pyrex glass bowls – my husband uses the 1-cup size for homemade yogurt every day.
Bee’s Wrap brand food wraps and other similar brands are organic cotton muslin covered with beeswax, jojoba oil, and tree resin. You warm the Bee’s Wrap slightly in your hands, form a seal on the top of a bowl or around an onion, hunk of bread or waffle, and it seals in the fridge. The antibacterial properties of the beeswax and jojoba oil help to keep food fresh and allow you to use the Bee’s Wrap again and again.

In addition, there is a 13.75 by 12.5 inches cast iron table for large and sturdy work surfaces. The table generates only a minimal amount of vibration that gives you almost absolute control over the band saw.
Powerful but Quiet – The manufacturer equips a Rikon 10-305 bandsaw with 1/3 horsepower motor that runs quietly yet sufficiently to withstand heavy-duty tasks. Even though the motor specification might look underpowered, the band saw can cut smoothly through cherry, pine, and oak wood.
To test its power capacity, I even tried resawing large pieces of wood with this tool. It squared up 10 pieces of 4×4 poplar wood in a row without decreasing in power. Each piece was exactly 1/64 inches thick along the entire length, no more or less.

Hassle-free adjustment
There are two adjustments that do not require a tool to adjust. They are the angle, fence tension, blade tracking and upper guide adjustment.
Angle adjustment – It’s really easy to get the angle cut with this band saw. You just need to unlock the trunnion under the table, tilt the tabletop until you get the desired angle, and lock the trunnion back up to assure the position.
Fence tension adjustment – You can adjust the fence tension by simply adjusting the front locking lever. Particularly, you turn it counter-clockwise to loosen it up, and you turn it in the opposite direction for tightening it up. Be careful not to pull it back out of adjustment by making it too tight.
Blade tracking adjustment – The blade needs the track in the center of the upper wheel. There are two things you need to adjust, the upper wheel and the knob at the back of the upper wheel. The knob’s function is to tilt the wheel forth and back. Now, you need to adjust two of them at the same time. Your left-hand spins the wheel until it gets right in the center, and while doing that, your right-hand turns the knob to adjust the wheel back and forth. Once you’ve done adjusting, lock down the knob.
Upper guide adjustment – When using the band saw, you want the upper guide to be as close to your work pieces as possible to keep the blade tracking correctly. In particular, you need to raise the upper guide lever up and down. After that, you turn the knob to raise the upper guide up or down.

Blade guide twists out– Sometimes the blade twists out of square even when the wing nut is tightened. It requires some disassembly to adjust it. You might need some tool to loosen the screws. If it does not help, take it to the warranty service center for help.
Can’t resaw a large object– If you are going to resaw something larger than 4.625 inches, I have bad news for you. In other words, you cannot resaw anything larger or equal to 2×6 inches wood pieces.

Realizing the problem, I called the warranty service center to ask for a solution. I talked to them for like 15 minutes and they did not understand anything I said. As a result, I tried to take a picture and sent it to them.
I was expecting them to get their employees to come directly to my place to fix it. But I guessed my standard was too high, they asked me to get a hammer or rubber mallet and bang until the shaft pops out. Then I put the retaining clip on and it worked, yet, it would not stay on.
I thought I deserved a proper retaining clip from the manufacturer. In addition, my point is that in those three days, I was the one who fixed everything on my own. I did not receive any support except the conversation through the phone, not to mention I had to pay for it.
Complicated set up – This is where this band saw losses point to the Rikon 10-305. The first few steps are easy, but the rest are quite complicated. There are no markings in the tension spring for precise ballpark selection.
Not only that, other adjustments on this band saw also don’t have any marks for measurement. Good luck getting the right setting through trial and error.
Flimsy tension adjustment knob – Everything in this band saw is sturdy except the tension adjustment knob. Once I tightened it too much and it broke. It popped right off the top of the shaft, and there was no more tension adjustment for me.
Actually, I got it replaced by the warranty service anyway. However, I need to point this out to let you see the quality of this band.

My Recommendation
I would love this band so much more if it was not because of the bad warranty service and the complicated setup process. Nevertheless, I got this band saw at a much lower cost, so I would not complain much more.

Pros
Powerful and Quiet – At first, I thought there was no such thing as a quiet metal cutting band saw. However, this band really surprises me. It runs the power of an 115-volt motor (can rewire to 230 volts) producing 0.5 horsepower. Accordingly, you will be able to cut through any tough object.
Despite being so powerful, the band operates quietly. I often work in the morning, and from the day I brought this band saw home, I have received no complaint from my neighbors at all.
Variable speed – The speed variations emphasize that this band saw specializes in cutting metal. As you can see, the speed range is at 80, 120, and 200 feet per minute which is much lower than the 3,000 feet per minute for cutting wood. Again, the lower the speed, the better it cuts through metal.

Bad instruction – When I read the line “use provided hardware”, I laughed so hard. What a useful instruction, what was I supposed to do with the pile of bolts/nuts/pieces in the box?
Apparently, a comment like this is not helpful at all. I had to figure out everything on my own through observation and deduction, it took me like 3 hours to assemble the band saw.
Short table – Every time I use this band saw, I must sit on a short chair. It’s just 25 inches off the ground if you are at a medium height or lower, then it will be fine.
However, if you are taller like me, it will make you feel really uncomfortable. And apparently, sitting on a chair while using a band saw is not the wisest idea either, yet it is still more comfortable than bending down to work.
Weak legs – As I was moving the band saw, I recognized that the two front legs wobbled and bent a lot. In other words, they are not very stable. Likewise, don’t be hasty when you pick up the head to the vertical position if it pops up too quick both legs will come off the ground. Obviously, the legs need a little more bracing.
Plastic pulley housing – I notice that the pulley housing is made of plastic, which makes me unhappy. Because with the money I paid, I deserve at least a metal pulley housing. However, the plastic seems to be tough enough to do the job, so in the end, it’s just a matter of personal preference.
