All dominion and greatness are for Allah, and all the prayers and all good speech and action are for Him. Peace be upon you, O Prophet, and likewise the Mercy of Allah and His Blessings. And peace be upon us, and upon the pious servants of Allah. I testify that there is none who has the right to be worshipped except Allah, and I testify that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger.

Attahiyat is obligatory in salah:

There are seven mandatory parts in salah. Attahiyat is one of them. If we miss it in Salah, our salah will not be considered a complete one. That shows how important it is in salat that your salat is incomplete by missing it. Let’s read the mandatory parts of salah;

Takbir Tahrima

Qiyam

Qira’at

Ruku

Sajda

Qa’dah Akhera/Attahiyat

Salam

Shabe Miraj and Attahiyat:

At the night of Miraj, Hazrat Muhammad SAW communicated with Allah SWT. At the time when he met his Creator and the Creator of the whole universe, Allah Almighty, he didn’t say Salam because humans can’t wish Allah peace. That’s why Hazrat Muhammad SAW said, “All compliments, all prayers, and worship are for Allah.” Allah SWT replied, “Peace be upon you, Oh Prophet and Allah’s Mercy and Blessings.” To this, Hazrat Muhammad SAW said, “Peace be on us and on all good slaves of Allah.” The angels listening to the conversation between Allah and His Apostle said, “I bear witness that no one is worthy of worship except Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.”

Note: The conversation between Allah and Hazrat Muhammad SAW was in Arabic, but we shared its translation in English for your easiness and understanding.

Tashahhud in Attahiyat:

Another importance of Attahiyat is it includes Tashahhud, which is the testimony of being a Muslim. There is also a hadith narrated in Sunan an-Nasai, which highlights the importance of Tashahhud in Salat. Read the hadith given below;

“When the Messenger of Allah SWT sat to say the tashahhud, he placed his left hand on his left thigh (and placed his right hand on his right thigh) and pointed with his forefinger, and his gaze did not go beyond the finger with which he was pointing.”

The above hadith shows the proper way of offering Tashahhud in Salat.

The true essence of Attahiyat:

If we pay to heed closely to Attahiyat, we can feel its true essence. In the start, we praise Allah Almighty. Then we remind ourselves “Waqia of Shabe Miraj,” where our beloved Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (May Allah be pleased with him) went all the way to Paradise to meet Allah Almighty. After that, we confess that no one is worthy of worship except Allah. Also, we admit from the core of our heart that Hazrat Muhammad (Peace be upon him) is the servant and Apostle of Allah SWT.

Conclusion:

The whole article highlights the importance of Attahiyat. So, it is concluded that our heart and mind must be focused on its translation whenever we sit to recite it in salat. However, if someone doesn’t remember its translation, only pay attention to Allah. In return, He will shower His blessings on you.
