The basic sciences program is the first part of your medical studies that is completed over five semesters. This period of your medical education focuses on building a strong base in several theoretical subjects related to the human body, its structure and various diseases.
The basic sciences MD program covers major topics such as the human body and its functions, metabolism and nutrition, infection, diseases and response among other subjects. You will also receive lessons in medical ethics and professionalism while also developing clinical skills.
Let’s analyze the subjects that are covered in the basic science program in detail.
Semester One
- The human body, structure and function – In this topic, you will understand the structure of the human body through lectures, cadaver dissections and radiograph evaluation.
- Human histology and physiology – This course explores the anatomy of cells, organs and tissues and explains their functions and interactions.
- Clinical skills – The beginning of clinical skills development focuses on improving students’ communication skills, such as their interaction with patients and healthcare professionals.
Semester Two
- Metabolism and nutrition – The metabolic processes, nutritional intake and energy-yielding mechanism are studied in this subject.
- Genetics and development – This gives you an understanding of various clinical genetic practices and also updates you on recent discoveries in human genetics.
- Infection, defense and response – This course studies the diseases, diagnosis and treatment of several infections. It also covers topics like bacteriology, parasitology, virology and immunology.
- Medical ethics – This topic covers the legal and ethical issues associated with practicing medicine.
Semester Three
- Neuroscience and neurology – This course is all about studying the pathology, physiology, and structure of the brain, spinal cord, and nervous systems.
- Systems and diseases – This is where you will start studying the endocrine system and various related diseases.
- Behavioral medicine – The basic principles of human behavior are studied in this topic. You will explore the biological, social and cultural aspects that impact personality development in humans.
Semester Four
- Systems and diseases II – This section of the course will deal with the study of reproductive and gastrointestinal systems and pediatrics.
- System and diseases III – This series covers the cardiovascular, respiratory, and renal systems.
Semester Five
- Systems and Diseases IV – This course covers the immune, hematologic, integumentary and musculoskeletal systems along with multisystem diseases.
Every semester includes a dedicated lesson on developing clinical skills in medical students. After developing effective communication skills, you will develop physical exam skills that will improve your ability to conduct a complete physical exam and history analysis.
The foundations of clinical medicine are also laid in an attempt to make the transition to clinical rotations easier. Emphasis is placed on clinical problem solving which allows you to take on rotations without any roadblocks.
Several colleges also give USMLE Step 1 preparation for students along with basic science classes to ensure they are successful in passing the exam.
