Writing Academic Papers Under Time Constraints

If you are feverishly preparing for an exam that will take place the next morning, that first recommendation may not seem all that helpful at the time. Procrastination is arguably the most significant reason why even clever students might get low marks from time to time. (Begin as early as possible!)

You may also plan how you will spend your time during the actual exam. Your lecturer is aware of the types of paragraphs that are more difficult to write and will grade them appropriately. Is it necessary for you to “analyse” the question? If this is the case, avoid filling your page with a summary. Additionally, if the question asks for “proof,” don’t spend the majority of your time expressing your own personal ideas.

Respond to the appropriate question.

Before you begin your response, you should be certain that you understand the question. Sometimes I have to fail well-written papers because they fail to handle the subject that has been given to me while grading a university writing competence exam.

If the question asks you to “explain” a subject, a paragraph in which you express your own personal perspective will not be very helpful in answering the question. For example, if the question requests that you provide a concrete example, a paragraph that outlines what “some people say” about the issue would be of little assistance. Gather your ideas and write them down.

Avoid the temptation to start churning out words as soon as possible. To go anywhere in an essay, you must first figure out where you want to go and how to get there.

Make an outline or a mind map of your thesis to prevent time-consuming false starts. A mind map is similar to a family tree for your thesis and will help you organise your thoughts. Begin at the “trunk” of the tree (a circle in the centre of your paper). Connect the major branches (circles that indicate subtopics) to the fundamental concept by drawing lines between them, and continue fanning out in this fashion. If a specific branch bears fruit, it should be separated and treated as a distinct organism.

Give yourself time to edit.

Please keep in mind that just adding on more paragraphs or inserting words does not constitute modification. Students will sometimes look back to the question in the midst of a difficult paragraph and come up with a whole different notion. They will then rapidly exit their present paragraph and create a rudimentary transition, such as: “However, there is another element that is much more vital…” They continue in this fashion, much like a contractor who continues to demolish walls in order to construct additional wings onto a home.
